  • Cut-ins are shots that cut into the central action.
  • Cut-aways are shots that cut away from the central action to show a related subject.
  • Cut-ins and cut-aways can be used to add interest or to cover shot changes, like a change in angle.

Watch how these techniques work together.

  • Use a long shot to establish the center.
  • Set up a medium shot to focus on a specific action or object.
  • Use a close up to obtain the greatest viewer impact.
